Norway Says More Than 50% of New Cars Are Electric

A new report says that Norway has become the first country in the world in which 50% of all new cars sold are electric.

The report, released on January 5, was by Norway's Information Council for Road Traffic. It said that electric vehicles accounted for 54.3% of new car sales in 2020, up from 42.4% a year earlier.

The group said that the four best-selling cars in the country were the Audi e-tron, the Tesla Model 3, the Volkswagen ID.3 and the Nissan Leaf — all fully electric.

Hybrid vehicles — which use both traditional fuel and electricity — also became more popular, with almost 30% of new cars being hybrid in 2020, compared to almost 26% in 2019. Diesel cars accounted for 9% of all new car sales in 2020, and gas cars were 8%.

The report also said that 66.7% of all new cars sold in Norway during December were electric, a new monthly record.

The Norwegian Electric Vehicle Association was expecting electric cars to make up around 60% of car sales in 2020. But it said the pandemic prevented this from happening because it delayed the release of many new cars. Experts think that electric cars will account for 65% of new car sales in Norway in 2021.

The country has said that it wants all new cars sold to be emission-free by 2025.
